Quinta do Barranco Longo
A little over eleven years ago Rui Virgínia made a wager amongst friends that it was possible to produce excellent wines in the Algarve, and that he was willing to prove it. He started with almost nothing and had the first vines planted on a 15-acre area of cleared land on his family’s orange grove in 2001. Oenologist Luís Euclides Rodrigues was his advisor at the time. In the meantime he now relies on his own knowhow and the advice of his oenologist Patrícia Piassab. The innovative winemaker loves good wines and also likes to forage for information on how high quality wines are produced elsewhere, visiting sites in places such as Southern France or Rioja, in Spain in the process. His credo reads thus: “Make special wines for special people, with quality coming first and not profit”. He hates blind taste tests, during which six wines are rated “professionally and objectively” within 20 minutes, and he has no interest in wine awards and medals. “Quality sells itself, even without a Mundus-Vini sticker or similar frills.”
And he’s not wrong. His latest creation, Remexido, is a blend of three white grape varieties. Its show-stopper: ageing takes place in Hungarian oak barrels that have previously stored Tokay wine, giving the wine a very special aromatic flavour. The minimalist design label pictures a local rebel, who embodied something like the Algarve’s Robin Hood in the 19th Century. Ruí’s signature guarantees that the content is of perfect quality and taste. Unlike the other wines of Quinta do Barranco Longo the bottle does not hold any more information apart from the Algarve Wine Seal. The calcareous clay soils around Algoz prove to be an ideal terroir for the white grape varieties Chardonnay, Arinto and Viognier, as well as for the red wine grapes Aragonez, Touriga-Nacional, Castelão, Alicante-Bouchet, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Trincadeira-Preta grown by Rui Virgínia. The Quê Reserva Bruto, a sparkling rosé produced in the classical “méthode champanoise” with bottle fermentation and riddling, is renowned as the “best” quality sparkling wine produced in the Algarve among connoisseurs. With the exception of Apolónia and some garrafeiras such as Veneza, the wines with the distinctive Q logo are only available in restaurants and, of course, directly from Quinta do Barronco Longo.
